101
Engineer Regiment (EOD) history dates back to its original formation as
1st Middlesex Volunteer Engineers at Kensington in January 1860. The
first Honorary Colonel was Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne who at
the time was the senior officer of the Corp of Royal Engineers.
Since
its inception in 1860 the Regiment has seen service in Egyptian War in
1882, South African War 1900, Great War of WW1 and WW2, Middle East,
France, Italy, Kosovo, Bosnia, and more recently in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
The
distinguished service that the regiment has been involved in has been
recognised by the presenting of a total of 103 honours and awards
comprising of:
12 Distinguished Service Order
43 Military Crosses
24 Distinguished Conduct Medals
2 George Cross
22 Military Medals
On the 1st January 2010, 101 Engineer Regiment (EOD) (V) celebrated
it's 150th Anniversary. However, on the 24th March 2010 it became a
hybrid Regiment and lost the (V) from its Regimental title. The
Regiment restructured its establishment with the re-subordination of
two Regular Squadrons, 17 Field Squadron (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
and 22 Headquarters & Support Squadron (Explosive Ordnance
Disposal). The restructuring of the Regiment was completed on the 1st
November 2010 with the transfer of 217 Field Squadron (Explosive
Ordnance Disposal) (Volunteers) from 101 Engineer Regiment to its
sister Regiment 33 Engineer Regiment (EOD) and in connection with that
transfer a further regular Squadron joined the establishment of 101
Engineer Regiment (EOD) in the form of 21 Field Squadron (Explosive
Ordnance Disposal). The new structure of the Regiment consists of 3
Regular Squadrons 17, 22 and 21 and 2 Territorial Army Squadrons 221 (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) (Volunteers)
and 579 (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) (Volunteers).
Although
the Regimental Headquarters has moved from Catford in London to
Wimbish, outside of the London boundaries next to its sister Regiment
it has been allowed the honour of retaining the ‘City of London’ within
its regimental title and also has the luxury of having the affiliation
with 5 City of London Livery Companies.
